Oopa Designer Slings are an elegant, luxurious version of the traditional Oopa Slings, named for a colloquial phrase (spelled “upa” in Portuguese) that adults use when speaking to young children to say “Let me pick you up!” Amy Glovsky Abreu founded the company in 2004 when, as a new mother, she found herself increasingly disappointed with the carriers available on the market. Even the ones her friends raved about were either uncomfortable or unattractive. So Amy began designing her own slings for herself and her friends, creating a hip and stylish alternative to the available options. Oopa Designer Slings seek to make babywearing both a fashion statement and an incredibly beneficial thing to do for your child.
Each Oopa Designer Sling is completely handmade, so you know you have a completely unique heirloom in which to cradle your child and one day pass along. Melding traditional babywearing methods with modern day flair, Oopa Designer Slings help you wear your baby in style!
Oopa Designer Slings are made from deliciously soft fabric. Available in a wide array of colors, Oopa Designer Slings are all 100% silk shantung or dupioni, and many have silk charmuse lining on the bottom part of the sling. Many people believe silk slings are not only the most elegant, but also the most comfortable. Though very lightweight and breathable, silk is incredibly strong and supportive. Silk needs to be babied more than a stronger, cotton sling, but there is nothing more stunning than your beautiful baby in a beautiful sling.
Oopa Designer Slings use aluminum rings designed and tested to withstand up to 300 pounds – though as comfortable as they truly are, we would not recommend carrying a baby over 35 pounds. (Just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you should.) These rings are designed exclusively for use in baby carriers like the Oopa Designer Sling.
Oopa Designer Slings are designed to have a long and flowing tail. The tail of sling allows you to pull on it to make adjustments and get the perfect position for your baby. The tail transforms the Oopa Designer Sling from a basic baby carrier into an innovative fashion accessory. The flowing tails in gorgeous fabrics add a hint of glamour to your new-mommy life, but they also serve a functional purpose. The tail of the Oopa Designer Sling provides a discreet nursing cover or plenty of fabric to shield your baby’s head from the elements. And the extra warmth of cashmere gives you an extra cuddly blanket on the fly.
You should treat your Oopa Designer Sling like you would treat your absolute favorite item in the closet. Dry clean or hand wash your Oopa Designer Sling in cold water with a delicate detergent, and hang your Oopa to dry!
You can wear your Oopa Designer Sling in a variety of different positions, depending on your baby’s age and needs. The hip Carry, the Cradle Carry and the Kangaroo Carry are the most popular. Before you use your Oopa Designer Sling for the first time, practice with a doll to get the feel of the sling. You can also practice in front of a mirror or over a soft surface like a bed. In a short time, you will feel comfortable and confident slinging your baby in any situation.
